How to Run a Water Meter Leak Test
Shut Everything Off
Turn off all fixtures and appliances. Pause the dishwasher, washing machine, ice maker, irrigation and any water treatment that uses water.
Find Your Meter
It is usually in a ground-level box near the street or curb. Lift the lid carefully and check for insects or debris.
Read the Meter
Note the numbers on the dial. Many meters also have a small leak indicator, often a triangle or star, that spins when any flow is present.
Wait Without Using Water
Leave everything off for 15 to 30 minutes.
Read It Again
If the numbers changed or the indicator moved, water is flowing when nothing should be using it.
